Chapter Thirteen

Rosa began Wednesday morning in a good mood, reading over breakfast on the terrace in her most comfortable shorts. Dory hadn’t come home last night, as she’d hinted might be the case, and Rosa couldn’t deny she enjoyed having the apartment to herself. If Dory really did return to the UK for a week then Rosa could look forward to more of this guilt-free liberty and this afternoon there was the dance session at Nicholas Centre to look forward to.

After breakfast, she put on her headphones and listened to music while she deadheaded and watered the nodding red geraniums on the terrace. As she worked, ‘The Shape of You’ came on and she began to dance her way around the terracotta pots.

Carried away by the sensuous moves, she twisted on the spot and zigzagged her hands down her torso.

Delighted giggles burst onto the air behind her.

Rosa snatched off her headphones and whirled around to find Paige laughing and clapping. ‘You were dancing! You were good.’

Zach, standing behind Paige, wore a broad grin and a decided gleam in his eyes. ‘Most … arresting,’ he confirmed.

‘I want to dance too! Please can we?’ Paige jumped on her tippy toes.

‘I could teach you an easy one, but maybe it wouldn’t work with Uncle Zach’s plans.’ Rosa tried to sound as if she wasn’t discomposed by being found grinding to an Ed Sheeran song.

‘Mummy’s got a headache and Uncle Zach’s looking after me,’ Paige declared, as if that settled matters.

Zach met Rosa’s eyes over Paige’s head. ‘Maybe for five minutes?’ Then, to his niece, ‘We do have stuff to do this morning, Sunshine.’

Paige nodded absently, focused on Rosa disconnecting her headphones so the music poured from her iPad.

‘OK,’ she said, taking Paige’s hand. ‘We’re going to go side-side to the right – no, this way’s right – then side-side, left. And we’re going to clap. Side-side, clap! Side-side, clap! Then forward, back, forward, back, while we wiggle our shoulders. Let’s try that.’

The strings and piano introduction to a Celine Dion number began. Rosa nodded along, trying to concentrate on where she was meant to come in rather than on Zach’s interested gaze as he stood back to watch. She suddenly had a better idea. ‘I think Uncle Zach ought to dance too, don’t you?’

‘YEAH!’ Paige shouted, jumping up and down.

‘Not me.’ Zach folded his arms.

‘Aw, c’mon, Zachary!’ Paige cried, running over to him and trying to pull him along by his belt loops. ‘It’ll be fun.’

Zach pulled a long-suffering face but, uncrossing his arms, took up station so that Rosa was in the middle. She started the music again. ‘Ready?’ She tried not to react to Zach being so close but his warmth felt as if it was all over her. ‘Aaand … step-step, clap. Step-step – no, other way – step-step, clap, step-step, clap. Yes, you’ve got it! Well done, Paige.’

‘I’ve got it too,’ Zach pointed out, pretending to pout at not getting his praise.

‘Well done, Zachary,’ she said solemnly. As he
